ACE & FIXED HARDWARE REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT

Action Committee for Eldorado Background

The Action Committee for Eldorado (ACE) is a nonprofit organization that is staffed by dedicated volunteers who are committed to conserving Eldorado Canyon State Park. The ACE Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from the Access Fund, the American Alpine Club, the American Mountain Guides Association, and the Colorado Mountain Club, as well as unaffiliated members drawn from the climbing community. ACE has raised over $150,000 for the Park, and has organized and promoted thousands of hours of volunteer time creating and maintaining trails, planting trees, and assisting the Park in numerous other ways.

Fixed Hardware Review Committee

ACE also organizes and manages the Fixed Hardware Review Committee (FHRC). Each year the ACE Board of Directors appoints local climbers to serve on the FHRC, which reviews applications for new routes requiring fixed gear. FHRC members are responsible for polling the climbing community to determine whether the community supports new route proposals and proposals regarding the addition or relocation of fixed gear. Based on the results of the survey of the climbing community's opinion, the FHRC makes a recommendation to the Park to either approve or disapprove those proposals.

Celebrate Eldorado

As a result of Eldorado Canyon State Park's willingness to work with the climbing community to allow the continued establishment of new routes, climbers organized the first Eldorado chalk cleanup in 1991. ACE took over the chalk cleanup in 1992 and expanded the event over the years to become Celebrate Eldorado, a weekend-long gathering of volunteers, fundraising, and celebration. Activities at Celebrate Eldorado have taken many forms, including fixed hardware replacement, trail work, chalk cleanup, fundraising Climbathons, replanting efforts, and various gala events that feature fundraising auctions of donated gear. Since its inception, ACE has raised a total of over $150,000 for Eldorado through Celebrate Eldorado and other private fundraising efforts.

Celebrate Eldorado 2003 is scheduled for 13-14 September, 2003.

Fixed Hardware Replacement

A central activity at Celebrate Eldorado is fixed hardware replacement. Working from a list developed by the climbing community, qualified volunteers carefully replace fixed gear over the Celebrate Eldorado weekend.
